Aftermath
In the months after the oath, twelve priests laid hands on Archdeacon Thomas Parambil at Alangad — a canonically irregular attempt at episcopal consecration that nevertheless gave the dissenting community a head it recognised as its own.
In 1657, Pope Alexander VII dispatched a mission of Discalced Carmelites under Joseph Sebastiani, bypassing the Padroado entirely. By 1663, the majority of parishes were reconciled to Rome under the new jurisdiction — eventually becoming the Syro-Malabar Church — while a minority continued the line that would develop into the Malankara tradition.
The granite cross at Mattanchery still stands. Worn by sun, rain and three and a half centuries of footsteps, it is at once a parish landmark and a national witness to the agency of an indigenous Indian church.
